Insights from Matt Baxby: Leading Revolut's Growth in the Australian Fintech Landscape

Back to Posts

Great to have Matt Baxby, CEO of Revolut Australia as a special guest for our Edge Exchange series this week. Matt has spearheaded the rollout of Revolut, one of the world’s fastest growing fintech companies into Australia and is helping the company with its broader APAC market entry.

Getting traction as a neobank in a market where your competitors are 5 of the top 10 companies by market cap (CBA, NAB, Westpac, ANZ, Macquarie), has been no mean feat and it was fascinating to learn how Revolut’s product-led culture has been a key success factor and helped them win share, especially amongst a younger demographic who value the digital product experience above all else.

We could see why Matt has been the perfect person to lead that effort, combining the entrepreneurial DNA gained from 10 years working for Richard Branson at Virgin, with the discipline and scaled leadership that came with leading Retail Banking and then becoming Group CFO of Bank of Queensland.

One of the key startup attractions for Matt is the zero to one challenge of building a team, and he shared how he relishes the opportunity to hand pick a team of A-players that he really wants to work with and learn from. It was great to hear from Danielle Ross (Head of People) and Charlie Short (Head of Growth) about how they’re building their portfolios.

Thanks to Toby McKinnon, another stellar tech exec who recently joined the Hub community, for doing a great job helming the fireside chat.
