This week we kicked off the sixth year of the Hub’s AI Cadetship. Thirty high school students have joined the 2026 group, which runs through Term 3.
Some of them have already built apps, websites, robotics projects or 3D-printed things. Others are starting out. Their interests cover games, design, music, sport, engineering, cyber security, business and making things. Their plans after school are just as varied.
The first session was about a simple idea: technology is a lever. AI gives one person more capacity to learn, research, design, code and make a first version of an idea.
We also talked about high agency. It means going after a missing skill, a constraint or a problem yourself. That does not make the work easy. It does give young people a better starting point.
Over seven weeks, the cadets will learn practical ways to use AI and make projects that are useful, personal, creative or just fun. The point is for each of them to find out what they can do when they act on an idea.
